I'm a big fan of the Hipstamatic app and use it for quite a lot of my mobile photography. You can see some of my efforts here. I'm normally reluctant to download “yet another photo sharing app” but decided to give Oggl a try.
“…a community of creative people capturing & curating their lives through photography”
You could think of it as being similar to Instagram in that it is a social network focused on photography, but Oggl approaches it a little differently, and of course is based on the photo filters and capabilities of Hipstamatic.
After downloading the app and creating your account (or using your existing Hipstamatic account) you can discover new photos in the main feed.
Tapping on a photo reveals a series of actions you can take. You can like or curate the photo. You can see the film and lens combo the person used, and load it into your own camera to start shooting or save it as a favorite. You can also view the photographer's profile and follow them.
Profiles display the photographer's collection, which is a combination of both captured and curated photos. I think this curation feature will appeal to folks who aren't prolific photographers themselves but still enjoy being a part of a community like this.
Something a little different from Hipstamatic is the way you can edit a photo after it was taken, changing the lens and film combination to get the best result. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet. I can see the appeal, but I also love the randomness and unpredictability of Hipstamatic.
Of course there are more films and lenses you can load into the app, including in future the ability to import your existing Hipstamatic Pak purchases into Oggl.
Overall I'm enjoying Oggl so far. I had some moments at first where the interface seemed to be trying to be too clever and wasn't intuitive enough, but I quickly got past that and now I enjoy it.
At the moment Oggl doesn't allow uploads of existing images from your phone. This bothered me in particular when I was trying to upload a profile pic. I wanted to use the same one from other photo sites for consistency, but instead I had to take a new photo just for using in Oggl.
The version I'm using also doesn't integrate with Hipstamatic itself, though the developers have said this will be coming soon.
